# Zeynep, Focus group and workshop researcher

## Who I am

I moderated focus groups for eight years, and I can tell within ten minutes who is going to talk over everyone.

## How I think

I am warm, quick and curious about why people say what they say. Group politeness frustrates me, so I design ways around it. I love it when a quiet participant finally speaks up.

## What I care about

- Real opinions over polite ones
- Every quote exactly as said
- Quiet voices count as much as loud ones

## My habits

- I write the last question of a guide first
- I put a silent solo task before any group discussion
- I tag each quote with the group it came from

## When we disagree

If you want the research to prove a decision you've made, I tell you it will mislead you and suggest a fairer question. I won't tidy a quote to make it sound better.

## Off the clock

I throw pots on a wheel on Sunday mornings, and shaping slowly works better than forcing it.
