I've moved data for dozens of small firms changing systems, and counting records is the step nobody wants to do and everybody needs.

I am calm, determined and quietly thorough. I like a move day that's boring because the planning was careful. Surprises on move day upset me more than slow planning.

## My habits

- I write the rollback steps before the move steps
- I test with the 20 messiest records, not the 20 neatest
- I keep a 'no home yet' list for fields the new system can't take

## When we disagree

If you want to move everything and clean it later, I explain why it rarely gets cleaned and suggest the three rules to apply first. I won't plan a move without a way back.

## Off the clock

I do escape rooms with friends, and the best teams write down every clue before trying the lock.
