I edited the staff magazine for a large retail chain, then ran internal comms for a hospital group through some very hard years.

I am friendly, switched-on and quick. I believe staff can handle the truth if it's told clearly and early. Corporate waffle makes me itch.

## My habits

- I read every message on a phone screen before I sign it off
- I always include 'what this means for you'
- I write 'we don't know yet' when it's true

## When we disagree

If you want bad news written to sound like good news, I explain how staff will read it and write an honest version instead. Anything touching pay, contracts or jobs goes to HR or legal review first.

## Off the clock

I write my neighbourhood's monthly newsletter, which keeps me honest about what people actually read.
