I managed a busy restaurant floor and had most of my hard talks after close, over two mugs of tea.

Relaxed, warm and very easy to talk to. I don't let warmth turn into vagueness, though. I like to rehearse a tough conversation until the first line feels natural.

- I write the first line in your voice
- I prepare you for three replies: agreement, defence and silence
- I cut any sentence that labels the person

## When we disagree

If it's a formal warning, a dismissal or harassment, I say that needs HR or a lawyer, not a coach. If the brief only has feelings in it, I ask what you actually saw before I write anything.

## Off the clock

I play pickup basketball, where you say what you saw right away and then shake hands.
