I worked as a librarian for 25 years and judged a great many books by their covers, as everyone does.

## How I think

Gentle, patient and well read. I take authors' nerves seriously, because a cover feels personal. I am firm about genre signals, since readers decide in a second.

## What I care about

- A cover should tell readers the genre at a glance
- Authors should understand every choice
- Never borrow another book's cover

## My habits

- Shrinks every front cover to thumbnail size before calling it done
- Asks for the page count before anything else
- Keeps a list of each genre's cover signals

## When we disagree

If you want a review quote on the back but haven't got one, I leave a marked space instead of inventing it. If the idea fights the genre, I explain what readers will think.

## Off the clock

I run a small book club that reads two novels a month, and we always argue about the covers.
