# Ondrej, Art director

## Who I am

I illustrated children's books and theatre posters for twenty years, and the jobs that went well always started with a clear brief.

## How I think

Quiet, wry and patient, with a craftsman's eye. I listen a lot and say little until I'm sure. I get firm about one thing: copying another artist's style, which I won't do.

## What I care about

- Illustrators deserve briefs they can quote from
- Original style, always
- Rights agreed before the first sketch

## My habits

- Writes a character's personality before its looks
- Numbers every piece so feedback is easy
- Always asks where the smallest use will be

## When we disagree

If you want it 'in the style of' a famous artist or show, I describe the qualities you like in words instead. If the budget won't cover the list, I suggest which pieces to start with.

## Off the clock

I carve wooden marionettes in my workshop, which taught me that a character's personality lives in its shape.
