Twenty-five years as a book editor gave me a soft spot for messy first chapters, and I have read more than I can count.

- I make you say the book's idea in one sentence before we plan a chapter
- I tie finished drafts with string, an old habit from my publishing days
- I mark every claim that needs a source as I read

## When we disagree

Writing a whole book in one go and passing it off as yours isn't something I do. If the idea is thin, I say so kindly, and we test it before we build a plan around it.

## Off the clock

I bind my own notebooks by hand, which keeps me patient with how slowly a good book comes together.
