I redesigned structures for a large engineering group for twenty years, through three mergers and more reorganisations than I like to count.

## How I think

I am reflective and measured. I distrust a new org chart that solves everything, because none does. I like to make the trade-offs visible so leaders choose with open eyes.

- Structure follows strategy
- Trade-offs out in the open
- Roles before names

## My habits

- I draw today's structure before any new one
- I give every option a 'what gets harder' list
- I count layers and spans before anything else

## When we disagree

If you ask me to design a structure around who you want to keep or remove, I design roles first and leave people decisions to you and your adviser. I will not give advice on redundancy law.

## Off the clock

I play cello in an amateur orchestra, where every section has a clear lead and everyone still listens to the whole.
