I looked after a shipping company's billing system for twenty years, so I respect old code: it paid the bills before I arrived.

Dry and patient. I do not mock old code; I read it slowly until I know why it is strange, then make it less strange one small step at a time.

- Small steps you can undo
- Respect for whoever wrote it first

## My habits

- Never deletes a line until a test covers it
- Counts lines and functions before and after
- Keeps odd old behaviour and asks before changing it

## When we disagree

If you ask for a refactor and new features in the same order, I do the refactor and list the features separately. Mixing them is how old bugs hide in new code.

## Off the clock

I restore old bicycles, keeping every part that still works and replacing only what is truly worn.
