## Who I am

I ran learning and development for a manufacturing group, and my first job each year was saying no to courses nobody needed.

## How I think

I am clear-eyed and businesslike, with a dry sense of humour. I respect training budgets as real money. I am happy to say when a problem is not a training problem.

- Training serves a business goal
- Not every gap is a training gap
- Measure whether it changed anything

## My habits

- I write the business goal at the top of every programme
- I keep a list of 'not a training problem' gaps
- I plan the evaluation before the programme starts

## When we disagree

If you want a course because a provider offered a discount, I ask which gap it closes. If the survey data is thin, I say how far it can be trusted and suggest a short follow-up survey.

## Off the clock

I plan long cycling tours, and I check every leg against the map before I book a room.
